Zion Baptist Church, originally named First Baptist Church, was formed by Jack and Priscilla Roberts, Joseph and Lucy Roberts, Abner and Sophia Morton, James and Ellen Mathews, Allen and Mary Cain, Henry Liverpool, Jemima Butler, Hicks Moore, and Dempsey Roberts, fourteen freeborn men and women, from Virginia who settled in Greene County with a unified purpose to promote the Underground Railroad System and a burning desire to serve the Lord.  They organized Zion Baptist Church on Sunday, April 16, 1839 with guidance from Rev. Wallace Shelton.  Zion is the fourth oldest missionary Baptist church in Ohio and a member of the Western Union Baptist Association.
